THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

An English Review

c.1785

RCIN 913720

An English Review and its pair (on the opposite wall) are among Rowlandson’s largest and most important watercolours. They were intended to be framed and hung. The drawings show military reviews watched by crowds of spectators. Here the foreground features many of Rowlandson’s favourite characters: an out-of-control horseman, mismatched couples and leering men. The figures tumble over each other to get a view of the action, or of the pretty women who are dressed in their most fashionable outfits. Purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales, 1788 Cat. 16
