THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)
The Covent Garden Nightmare.
12 Apr 1784RCIN 810068
Just as Rowlandson could work in support of Fox, so he could ridicule him. This taunting satire of the politician is based on Henry Fuseli’s 1781 painting 'The Nightmare', which was widely copied and parodied. Rowlandson mocks Fox by placing him in the pose of the young woman in Fuseli’s original. The gaming dice on the table refer to the politician’s supposedly dissolute lifestyle.
