THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)
The Learned Scotchman or Magistrate's Mistake!!
15 Dec 1807RCIN 810667
A learned Scot excuses a bout of drunken behaviour with the motto Nemo mortalium omnibus horis sapit (‘no mortal is wise at all times’). The magistrate, whose gouty leg points to his own drinking excesses, misunderstands the Latin. The joke rests on the reversal of the expected roles. Rowlandson etched this print for Caricature Magazine after a drawing by Woodward.
