HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (1497/8-1543)

Anne Boleyn (c.1500-1536)

RCIN 912189

This is one of the few contemporary portraits of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Elizabeth I. Anne was executed for treason in May 1536.

Anne wears an informal gown, possibly one given to her as a gift by Henry. No finished portrait after this drawing is known.

Holbein’s skill at portraits meant he was called on to paint a number of Henry’s queens, as well as to provide pictures of potential brides for Henry’s information.
