LORENZO DI CREDI (C. 1459-1537)

The head of a youth

c.1490-1500

RCIN 912818

A drawing of the head of a youth turned slightly to the left, his eyes raised. This drawing is a preparatory study for both the 'Stigmatisation of St Francis' (Musee Fesch, Ajaccio) and the 'Mary Magdalene in the wilderness' (Bodemuseum, Berlin). Lorenzo di Credi, Pietro Perugino and Leonardo da Vinci all trained in the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio, the leading sculptor in Florence in the second half of the fifteenth century. In this study for a painting of the stigmatization of St Francis, the artist has outlined the face with fine metalpoint, then modelled the features and bone structure with a soft, broader line. White heightening has then been added with controlled strokes of the brush, capturing the effect of light falling from above.
