LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)
Recto: A seated old man, and studies and notes on the movement of water. Verso: Architectural studies
c.1510RCIN 912579
Recto: a drawing of an old man seated in profile to the right, in front of a tree. His legs are crossed, and his hand rests on a stick. To the right are four studies of swirling water, and a note. Verso: a plan, profiles, and an elevation of a facade with superimposed orders.
Leonardo often explored several different subjects on a single sheet of paper. On the right, he investigates the nature of swirling water, which in his notes he compares to plaited hair. On the left, Leonardo depicts a contemplative old man, of a type often drawn by the artist. The man appears to be gazing at the water but this was probably not Leonardo’s intention.
