LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

The arm of St Peter

c.1495

RCIN 912546

A right arm clothed in a sleeve of thick fabric, bent at the elbow, as though resting on the hip of a figure turning to the right. Leonardo was commissioned to paint the Last Supper in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan around 1493. This is the only drapery study for the mural to survive. It shows St Peter’s arm twisted behind his back as he leans over Judas’s shoulder.
