LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

Neptune

c.1504-5

RCIN 912570

The early biographer Giorgio Vasari stated that Leonardo executed a highly-worked drawing of the sea-god Neptune for Antonio Segni, master of the Papal mint. That drawing is now lost, but this preparatory sketch captures the tumult of man and horses, echoing the Battle of Anghiari that Leonardo was devising in the same years (see the opposite wall).
