LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

Recto: Studies for casting apparatus, and miscellaneous notes. Verso: Further casting studies, and lines of poetry

c.1492-3

RCIN 912349

The Sforza horse would have been the largest bronze cast in western Europe since antiquity, and required the building of an entire foundry, sketched at upper left and centre right, with the mould buried underground. The separated halves at lower right show tie-bars to secure the pieces of the mould. The largest drawings depict a pulley system to haul the mould out after casting. But all these preparations were in vain, and the project was abandoned after 1494.
