Merian’s legacy is found not only in the influence of her mode of natural history illustration, but also in the observations she made of the insects and plants she encountered. A number of species have been named after her. In 1902, the Split- Banded Owlet Butterfly was given the scientific name Opsiphanes cassina merianae in her honour.
