MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)
Branch of Cashew with Amber Phantom Butterfly and unidentified moth
1702-03RCIN 921170
Merian’s depiction of the cashew nut was criticised by Mark Catesby, who pointed out that she had misunderstood the structure of the plant: the nuts occur at the ends of the fruit rather than being joined to the stalk. It is clear that Catesby was familiar with Merian’s work, which was published seven years before he undertook his first research trip to America.
