The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society was the first journal devoted to science. In 1703, an advertisement in the Transactions announced Merian’s intention to publish the results of her Suriname researches. Interested parties could see sample illustrations by applying to Merian’s London correspondent, the apothecary James Petiver (c.1665–1718). Although Merian considered an English edition, she did not receive enough subscriptions and British readers bought her text in either Dutch or Latin.
