Jan Steen excels in animation and expression – the riotous drinker (a self-portrait), the sentimental fiddler, the drunken dancer, the befuddled cardplayer and the smug matron. He also shines in the tactile realism with which he depicts the props in this low-life comedy – the tables, cloths, pewter jug and foot warmer.
