TITIAN (C.1488-VENICE 1576) AND WORKSHOP
Madonna and Child in a Landscape with Tobias and the Angel
c. 1535-40Oil on panel | 85.2 x 120.3 x 1.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402863
Titian humanises the relationship between the divine mother and child; the Virgin’s warm embrace conveys the eternal security of parental comfort, whilst the twisting pose and blurred contours of Christ’s body bring the wriggling baby to life. The tenderness between the Virgin and Christ is mirrored in the interaction between Tobias and the Angel behind.
