GONZALES COQUES (ANTWERP 1614 - ANTWERP 1684)

The Family of Jan-Baptista Anthoine

Signed and dated 1664

Oil on copper | 56.5 x 73.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405339

This is a family portrait which, like Pot’s Charles I, grants precedence to the wife, who sits enthroned on her husband’s right hand, surrounded by her children. Coques learned something crucial from Rubens and van Dyck – how to paint the glow of health. The children here have an engaging, spirited and graceful energy, which provides an animated counterpart to the fine things – the silk, the lace and the marble.

Acquired by George IV in 1826
