PAULUS POTTER (ENKHUIZEN 1625-AMSTERDAM 1654)
Two Sportsmen Outside an Inn
Signed and dated 1651Oil on panel | 53.3 x 43.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 400942
Two gentleman hunters have ventured into the Dutch wilderness of barren dunes and inadequate hospitality. At this inn swine share the living quarters, the young stableboy is barefoot, and the innkeeper has to cool off in exasperation at the demands made upon him. The detail, precision and the luminosity of all the objects and surfaces in this scene make Potter the landscape equivalent of Gerrit Dou.
