WILLEM VAN MIERIS (LEIDEN 1662-LEIDEN 1747)
An old Man and a Girl at a Vegetable and Fish Stall
RCIN 405946
Willem van Mieris is usually regarded as a more mechanical version of his father, Frans van Mieris (1635 – 1681), and generally as symptomatic of the decline in Dutch art at this time. The justice of this criticism may be tested by comparison with Dou’s shop scene of sixty years previously (cat. 4), which hangs nearby.
Acquired by George IV by 1816
