JAN STEEN (LEIDEN 1626-LEIDEN 1679)
Cardplayers in a Tavern
RCIN 404576
Recent cleaning has revealed a work in mint condition, with the glossy surface of the paint intact throughout. This scene is probably intended as a criticism of idleness, its comedy derives from the idea that gaming is a symbol of courtship – of a contest between the sexes in which women hold all the cards.
Acquired by George IV in 1827
