ADAM WILLAERTS (ANTWERP 1577-UTRECHT 1664)
Embarkation at Margate of the Elector Palatine and Princess Elizabeth
RCIN 404994
This is an early, painted example of what we might now call ‘reportage’. It is bright, meticulous and full of incident. The royal couple (Princess Elizabeth – daughter of James I – and her husband Frederick V, Elector Palatine) left England in 1613. Ten years later, when this painting was completed, the ‘Winter King and Queen’ had accepted and lost the throne of Bohemia and had been deprived of all their lands.
Acquired by Queen Victoria in 1858
