Rose Satin Drawing Room, looking north and west, Carlton House
This is the central room on the first floor of the garden façade. It is hung with the finest silk and decorated with French furniture and Netherlandish paintings set into ornate, George IV frames. Portraits of Rubens (RCIN 400156) and Van Dyck (RCIN 404429), preside over a hang arranged in clusters of one over-three. No distinction was made between Dutch and Flemish – Adriaen van Ostade's Peasant Cottage (cat. 15) hangs between two Dutch landscapes under Teniers's large Peasants Dancing (RCIN 406363 – the grouping appears in both watercolours). Both scenes are crudely comic, which was not thought out of place in this refined setting.
