Charles II (r. 1660 – 85) married Catherine of Braganza (1638 – 1705) in 1662. The two were painted many times by Sir Peter Lely, born Pieter van der Faes, who had moved from Haarlem to England around 1641. He was appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary by Charles II in 1661, dominating the English portrait market for the remainder of his life. Abraham Blooteling moved to England from Amsterdam in 1673, and was one of the first printmakers in England to master the technique of mezzotint.
