Rustic summerhouses, hermitages and root houses became popular in the garden in the late eighteenth century in place of classical temples. Thomas Sandby’s design was one of a number that he made in the rustic or vernacular style which he probably prepared for George III’s brother Henry Frederick, who had succeeded William Augustus as Duke of Cumberland and Ranger of Windsor Great Park in 1766. It features a thatched conical roof, tree trunk supports, and stump tracery decoration to the window and portico.
