WILLIAM WOOLLETT (1735-85)
A View of the Garden &c at Carlton House in Pall Mall, a Palace of Her Royal Highness the Princess Dowager of Wales
circa 1766RCIN 702850
The garden of Frederick, Prince of Wales at Carlton House was considered an early example of the ‘new taste in gardening’ which swept away the formality of the seventeenth century. The garden was planted by William Kent in about 1731 – 2. This etching shows the garden over 25 years later. By then, the urban site had become a secluded haven, screened by belts of trees on either side of sweeping lawns. In the distance is an octagonal temple based on Lord Burlington’s villa at Chiswick.
