JEAN PICHORE (ACTIVE C. 1501-20)
Cardinal York's Book of Hours
c.1500RCIN 1005087
The illumination for the month of April depicts a courting couple seated on a turf bench. Daisies and narcissi grow at their feet, while roses climb through the trellis work of the pergola above them. The ties of the pergola joints are detailed in gold. The illuminator, Jean Pichore, ran a large workshop in Paris producing illuminated manuscripts and counted amongst his chief patrons Cardinal Georges d’Amboise (1460 – 1510), one of the great garden makers of the Renaissance.
