LA'L (ACTIVE 1570-1605)

Folio from a Mughal album (A Prince Recites Poetry to Attendants in a Garden by Lal; calligraphy attributed to Muhamamd Husayn Kashmiri and Mir Ali).

1590 - 1610

RCIN 1005047

A young prince recites poetry to two companions while attendants and female musicians regale them with wine and music. The calligraphy on the panels of marbled paper around the image describes in Chaghatai (Turkish) script ‘the Time of the Friends’. The garden was frequently depicted in Persian and Mughal manuscripts as the natural setting for the enjoyment of the princely arts of music and poetry, and for intellectual discussion.
