SIR GODFREY KNELLER (1646-1723)

Henry Wise (1653-1738)

c.1715

RCIN 405636

Henry Wise was a nurseryman and master gardener and was responsible for some of the most impressive formal gardens laid out in England in the late seventeenth century. As royal gardener to William III and Mary II, and subsequently to Queen Anne, he worked at Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle. His ambitious scheme for the Maestricht Garden at Windsor Castle was eventually shelved during the reign of George I owing to escalating costs.
