This book was the most influential of all sources for the Renaissance garden. Its 200 woodcut illustrations evoke the dream world of the island garden of Cythera, where Poliphilus, the hero of the title, searches for his lover Polia. Revived forms from classical architecture (such as obelisks, pyramids and pergolas) appear throughout the illustrations, and directly influenced garden makers of the period.
