Watercolours such as this one symbolised the same qualities of ease and plenty, social continuity and harmony that had imbued garden images for centuries. The First World War brought this vision to an end, as the maintenance of many of the gardens portrayed became unsustainable, and the fashion for garden watercolours began to wane. Neither of the gardens portrayed by Parsons in the Sussex villages of Handcross or Staplefield survives.
