MARIA VAN OOSTERWYCK (NOORDDORP 1630-UITDAM 1693)
Still Life with Flowers and Butterflies
Signed and dated 1686RCIN 405626
The new genre of floral still-life painting developed in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century to cater to a new market of middle-class buyers with horticultural interests. This example by Maria van Oosterwyck, a successful flower painter from Nootdorp near Delft, combines a mix of wild and cultivated flowers, including the pink Provins rose and its striped relative Rosa Mundi.
