MARIA VAN OOSTERWYCK (NOORDDORP 1630-UITDAM 1693)
Still Life with Flowers, Insects and a Shell
Signed and dated 1689RCIN 405625
Shells were expensive luxury items like bulbs and were prized by many of the prominent gardeners of the period, who acquired them alongside their plant collections. Oosterwyck’s inclusion of the shell in this painting is therefore redolent of opulence and wealth. This painting is the artist’s latest recorded work, produced at a time when she had acquired a reputation far beyond the Dutch Republic.
