Tapestry of a pergola

1640-60

RCIN 28029

This tapestry is one of a set of five woven by Jacob Wauters (d. 1660) of Antwerp. The design is of a type that was often described in contemporary inventories as ‘Flower potts and pillars’. In this example, a vine-covered double pergola provides the design framework for a display of expensive florists’ flowers in two large urns (‘Flower potts’). This design gave weavers the opportunity to depict the same prestigious and exotic plants that were favoured in floral still life paintings on canvas.
