WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)
The Family of George II
c. 1731-2RCIN 401358
Queen Caroline, consort of George II, was a leading figure in the development of the English landscape garden. The setting for this family gathering of George II, Queen Caroline and their children appears to be the Temple on the Mount in the gardens of Richmond Palace. The temple was designed by William Kent in the style of the ancient Temple of the Sibyl, whose wild setting in the Italian countryside was well known. Its inclusion here signifies the close association in the eighteenth-century mind of the freedom of nature and the constitutional liberty enjoyed by the people of Britain.
