Queen Victoria invented the royal garden party as it is understood today. The first event of this kind was held in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and another was staged in 1897 to mark the queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Here, Queen Victoria leaves the tea tent to return to the palace in her carriage. The presence of two future monarchs, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), and Prince Edward of York (later Edward VIII) is an affirmation of dynastic continuity that echoes the message of The Family of Henry VIII, seen earlier in the exhibition.
