THOMAS SANDBY (1721-98)
The walk and terrace at Cranbourne Lodge
dated 19 Sep 1752RCIN 914636
This watercolour depicts one of the official residences of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721 – 65) in Windsor Great Park. Although some works were carried out in the gardens during 1752, the terracing and avenues of trees are those which had been laid out by the royal gardener, Henry Wise, between 1699 and 1712. On the left, gardeners sweep worm-casts from the grass whilst another figure occupies the revolving seat at the far end of the lawn. This was probably the ‘moveable Garden Seat’ on wheels that was recorded in 1768.
