SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1803-73)
Windsor Castle in modern times; Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Victoria, Princess Royal
1841-43RCIN 406903
This family portrait of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with their eldest child, Victoria, Princess Royal, includes a prominent view through the window of the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle towards the garden on the East Terrace. The garden was laid out not by the royal couple, but by Queen Victoria’s uncle George IV. Its inclusion here expresses the importance of the garden to the royal couple as a necessary ingredient of happy family life, rather than as a demonstration of monarchical status and privilege. Queen Victoria’s mother, Victoria, Duchess of Kent, can be identified in the garden, being pulled along the path in a bath chair.
