The Coronation necklace

1858 - 1953

Diamonds, gold, silver, platinum | 38.1 cm (length) | RCIN 100003

This necklace was made for Queen Victoria in 1858 from 28 diamonds removed from a Garter badge and sword hilt. The queen had commissioned the necklace to replace a number of family jewels which had belonged to her grandmother, Queen Charlotte, which were given to the Duke of Cumberland (the King of Hanover) as a result of a claim begun in 1839. The necklace was regularly worn by Queen Victoria and was subsequently worn by Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth at their coronations in 1902, 1911 and 1937. Her Majesty The Queen also wore the necklace to her own coronation in 1953.
