A self-portrait
1938RCIN 812687
A disciple of Walter Sickert, Rayner worked in the printmaking technique of drypoint, which involves scratching a design directly into a metal plate. This rapid and spontaneous technique leaves only a shallow groove in the surface of the plate, unlike the deep incision of the engraver's burin or the chemical action of etching, and just a few good impressions are possible.
