DANIEL MYTENS (C. 1590-1647)

A Self-Portrait

c. 1630

RCIN 404431

Daniel Mytens trained in Holland but spent most of his career in England working at the courts of James I and Charles I.  This self-portrait was probably painted for Charles I whose 'CR' brand appears on the reverse. Mytens, turning over his left shoulder, fixes the viewer with a steady, outward gaze – something he intensifies by positioning his left eye along the central, vertical axis of the painting.
