In 1745 William Hogarth painted his self-portrait to hang in his house in Leicester Square, and four years later he published his own engraving after the painting. The artist's likeness is presented as if on an oval canvas, resting on the works of Shakespeare, Swift and Milton; the presence of the artist's pug dog perhaps alludes to the 'faithfulness' of Hogarth's art.
