An allegorical design in honour of Jean-Antoine Watteau
c. 1728RCIN 906180
This is a study for Boucher's etched frontispiece to a compendium of prints after the drawings of Watteau. The winged figure of Fame descends, blowing a trumpet, while the Graces place a wreath on a portrait of the artist, nestling in the fronds of a palm of Victory. Several of the elements are derived from the etching of Genius of Castiglione (no. 126), for Castiglione's prints were greatly esteemed by the artists of the French Rococo.
