George Frederic Watts (1817-1904)
1865RCIN 2941861
Cameron is considered today one of the most important photographers of the nineteenth century. She took up photography late in life, aged 48, when already familiar with a large circle of artists and intellectuals frequenting Little Holland House, home to her sister Sarah and a leading artistic and cultural London salon. Watts, a celebrated artist and resident of the house, became a close friend of Cameron; he followed her artistic development, becoming a sort of mentor. Cameron took several portraits of Watts, and also included him in some of her allegorical work.
