Paul Sandby and his brother Thomas were among the founders of both the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1761 and the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. A desire to raise the status of artists is implicit here, with Sandby elegantly dressed and leaning out of the window of a well-appointed house to draw from nature.
