Portrait of an Artist
1600-30RCIN 402848
This mysterious portrait is first firmly recorded in one of George III's inventories where it is listed as a Portrait of an Artist by Bassano (an attribution now widely disputed) and noted as being ‘very fine'. During conservation, an X-radiograph revealed the figure of a woman painted upside down underneath the current portrait, while removal of later overpaint in the area around the artist’s palette exposed a partially-cropped crucifix.
