Self-portraits of Sir Godfrey Kneller
Godfrey Kneller dominated English portraiture for 30 years – Principal Painter to William III and Queen Anne, Gentleman of the Privy Chamber, and created a Baronet in 1715. He promoted himself assiduously through self-portraiture and the publication of prints after his paintings, and here we see how Kneller's public image evolved over the course of his career – from a dashing young man in the spirit of his idol Anthony Van Dyck, to a pillar of the Establishment, as well-dressed and noble as any of his sitters.
