ATTRIBUTED TO GUERCINO (CENTO 1591-BOLOGNA 1666)

St Luke painting the Virgin and Child

c. 1650

RCIN 902728

The Saint is shown seated on a low chair, about to begin painting his miraculous image of the Virgin and Child, which is outlined on a panel before him. His symbol of an ox looks on. Guercino executed the drawing in a sophisticated combination of red and black chalks, and it was presumably made as a finished work of art. The staining and woodworm holes show that it was framed and hung at an early date.
