JOHAN JOSEPH ZOFFANY (FRANKFURT 1733-LONDON 1810)
The Tribuna of the Uffizi
1772-77RCIN 406983
In 1772 Queen Charlotte commissioned Zoffany to travel to Florence and paint the highlights of the Grand Duke's collection which were displayed in the 'Tribuna', the hexagonal room on the east side of the Palazzo Uffizi. In contrast to The Academicians, this painting depicts the reception of art rather than its creation. A group of connoisseurs dressed in their finery, gather to admire and discuss the collection which includes works by Titian, Raphael and Rubens.
