Coinage
From 1952 to 1999 the Duke of Edinburgh was President of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee which oversees the design of coins, seals and medals. He was therefore closely involved in the discussions concerning the design of the new coinage in 1952. Displayed here is a proof set of the coinage produced at the start of The Queen’s reign. The medal to the left commemorates a visit to the new Royal Mint at Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, by The Queen and Prince Philip in 1997. Note the symbolism of the lion and unicorn (supporters) from the Royal Coat of Arms, turning a historic screw-press to mint the coinage.
