Prince Philip’s interest in playing polo started in earnest during his stay in Malta in 1949 while serving in the Royal Navy. He was encouraged to play by his uncle, Earl Mountbatten, who was commanding the 1st Cruiser Squadron there. He had an active polo career for twenty years before retiring from the sport in 1971 at the age of fifty.
