GUSTAV WILLIAM HENRY MULLINS (1854-1921)

The Four Generations, Osborne House, 1886 [in Portraits of Royal Children Vol.34 1885-1886]

26 Apr 1886

RCIN 2904357

This photograph, entitled 'The Four Generations', shows the link between Prince Philip’s mother, Princess Alice (a baby at the time), and her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, who is shown seated to the left. The infant Alice sits on the lap of her mother, Victoria (Princess Louis of Battenberg), who was the daughter of another Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s third child. However, Princess Alice had died from diphtheria in 1878, eight years before this photograph was taken, and so Alice’s sister Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, stands behind and links the four generations.
