ROGER FENTON (1819-69)
Balaklava, from the camp of the Scots Fusilier Guards
26 Mar 1855RCIN 2500492
During the winter of 1854-55 the roads between Balaklava and the heights before Sebastopol turned to almost impassable mud tracks. Most of the pack animals died and the men became the only means of transporting the supplies up to the siege lines. By Fenton’s arrival in the spring the worst of the weather had passed, and the roads had become usable again.
